Test your knowledge:
We will evaluate students existing knowledge with the help of an aptitude test to find out your current status of learning progression.
Who is this course for?
This course is designed for learners who are considering to appear for the Highers Mathematics Qualifications Scotland exam. It provides opportunities to enhance skills in planning and organising, working independently and within teams, critical thinking and decision making, research, communication, and self and peer evaluation, in a range of contexts.
What topics will be covered?
The Higher Mathematics course (Qualifications Scotland) develops learners’ algebraic, geometric, trigonometric, and analytical skills, with a strong focus on problem-solving and reasoning.
Algebraic Skills:
Working confidently with algebraic expressions and equations, including expanding and factorising brackets, simplifying expressions and algebraic fractions, solving quadratic equations using a variety of methods, completing the square, manipulating surds and indices, rearranging formulae, and solving inequalities. Learners will also study functions, graphs, and the equation of a straight line, including gradients, intercepts, and relationships between variables.
Geometry, Trigonometry & Vectors:
Understanding advanced properties of shapes and space, including circle theorems, angles, and geometric proofs. Learners will apply Pythagoras’ theorem and trigonometric relationships (including sine and cosine rules and trigonometric identities) to solve problems in two and three dimensions. This section also includes vectors, including vector notation, magnitude, direction, and applications in geometry and problem-solving.
Calculus:
Introduction to differentiation and integration as tools for analysing change. Learners will differentiate functions to find gradients and rates of change, and integrate functions to determine areas and reverse processes. Applications of calculus to real-world and mathematical contexts will also be explored.
Numeracy, Statistics & Data Handling:
Working with data and numerical reasoning, including percentages, growth and decay, compound measures, and interpreting statistical information. Learners will analyse data using measures of central tendency and spread, interpret graphs and charts, and understand correlation and regression, including the line of best fit.
Reasoning and Problem-Solving Skills:
Throughout the course, learners will develop strong mathematical reasoning skills, including logical thinking, problem interpretation, and clear communication of methods. Emphasis is placed on justifying solutions, applying knowledge to unfamiliar contexts, and demonstrating structured working to ensure accuracy and understanding.
The Higher Mathematics course (QS) covers the full specification required by Qualifications Scotland, ensuring learners are thoroughly prepared across all key areas. The course is designed to build confidence, deepen understanding, and develop the analytical skills needed for successful progression to further study or higher-level mathematics.
