Who is this course for?

This course is designed for learners who are considering to appear for the Highers Mathematics  Qualifications Scotland exam. It provides opportunities to enhance skills in planning and organising, working independently and within teams, critical thinking and decision making, research, communication, and self and peer evaluation, in a range of contexts.

What topics will be covered?

The Higher Mathematics course (Qualifications Scotland) develops learners’ algebraic, geometric, trigonometric, and analytical skills, with a strong focus on problem-solving and reasoning.

Algebraic Skills:

Working confidently with algebraic expressions and equations, including expanding and factorising brackets, simplifying expressions and algebraic fractions, solving quadratic equations using a variety of methods, completing the square, manipulating surds and indices, rearranging formulae, and solving inequalities. Learners will also study functions, graphs, and the equation of a straight line, including gradients, intercepts, and relationships between variables.

Geometry, Trigonometry & Vectors:

Understanding advanced properties of shapes and space, including circle theorems, angles, and geometric proofs. Learners will apply Pythagoras’ theorem and trigonometric relationships (including sine and cosine rules and trigonometric identities) to solve problems in two and three dimensions. This section also includes vectors, including vector notation, magnitude, direction, and applications in geometry and problem-solving.

Calculus:

Introduction to differentiation and integration as tools for analysing change. Learners will differentiate functions to find gradients and rates of change, and integrate functions to determine areas and reverse processes. Applications of calculus to real-world and mathematical contexts will also be explored.

Numeracy, Statistics & Data Handling:

Working with data and numerical reasoning, including percentages, growth and decay, compound measures, and interpreting statistical information. Learners will analyse data using measures of central tendency and spread, interpret graphs and charts, and understand correlation and regression, including the line of best fit.

Reasoning and Problem-Solving Skills:

Throughout the course, learners will develop strong mathematical reasoning skills, including logical thinking, problem interpretation, and clear communication of methods. Emphasis is placed on justifying solutions, applying knowledge to unfamiliar contexts, and demonstrating structured working to ensure accuracy and understanding.

The Higher Mathematics course (QS) covers the full specification required by Qualifications Scotland, ensuring learners are thoroughly prepared across all key areas. The course is designed to build confidence, deepen understanding, and develop the analytical skills needed for successful progression to further study or higher-level mathematics.

How We Teach

Our fully qualified Qualifications Scotland Assessors and Tutors provide high-quality lessons tailored to the set content for each session, helping every student achieve their full potential. We follow the latest Qualifications Scotland guidelines and update our lessons as needed.

We use both  Qualifications Scotland past papers and our own exam papers. Practicing with these past papers helps you identify the topics you’re strong in and those you need to work on. This way, you can track your revision progress and gain confidence in what you know.

Here’s what we focus on:

  • Comprehensive teaching and in-depth revision of all key areas of Qualifications Scotland Highers Mathematics
  • Practice with exam-standard questions to develop confidence and accuracy
  • Guided review of Qualifications Scotland marking guidelines to help students understand how marks are awarded
  • Development of effective exam techniques, consolidation of knowledge, and enhancement of problem-solving and reasoning skills
  • Ongoing tutor support via Microsoft Teams, allowing students to ask questions, receive guidance, and access learning materials, which are also available digitally through ITPT Moodle

Additional help to Students:

Students will be given access to ITPT Moodle, where they can use uploaded digital learning materials to support their learning at home.

This will include:

  • Practice exercises
  • Quizzes
  • A mock exam
  • A final assessment will be arranged at the end of the course, prior to the Qualifications Scotland examinations, to evaluate how well learners have understood and retained the knowledge covered during the tuition. Where any gaps are identified, additional support sessions will be provided to ensure each learner is fully prepared and confident to undertake the National 5 Mathematics exam.

Tutor Experience:

Students will be provided empathetic and fun environment which means they will be motivated to learn.

We are an Qualifications Scotland -approved centre delivering National, NPA, PDA, HNC, and HND qualifications, specialising in Qualifications Scotland programmes at SCQF levels 4 to 9. This extensive experience enables our tutors to identify and focus on the key topics, skills, and question styles commonly assessed in prelims and final examinations. Students are prepared using Qualifications Scotland past papers, with an emphasis on both tutor-led theoretical instruction and supervised practical learning. Our courses incorporate intensive, hands-on exercises designed to strengthen theoretical understanding while developing practical competence.

  • Tuition is delivered by experienced QS-qualified teachers with in-depth knowledge of the Qualifications Scotland curriculum and assessment requirements
  • Each student receives individual access to ITPT Moodle, providing full access to course lessons and learning resources
  • Dedicated guidance on effective time-management skills to support exam performance
  • Personalised support and one-to-one attention within a supportive and engaging learning environment, ensuring all questions are addressed thoroughly
